THE CURRICULUM

Go Beyond the Fundamentals

The Advanced Pottery Course is designed to help experienced learners move beyond the basics and develop greater control, refinement, and creative confidence.

01. Advanced Clay Bodies & Chemistry Master the characteristics, shrinkage rates, and working limits of porcelain, stoneware, and custom clay bodies.

02. Complex Hand-Building & Sculpting Combine slab construction, coiling, and internal armatures to build large-scale or multi-part sculptural forms.

03. Advanced Wheel Throwing Throw with larger clay volumes (3kg+) to create tall cylinders, wide platters, and challenging vessel proportions.

04. Multi-Part & Precision Assembly Learn precision joinery to attach complex spouts, handles, lids, and stacked thrown sections seamlessly.

05. Decorative Techniques & Surface Carving Incorporate intricate sgraffito, carved relief, resist techniques, and slip decorating to create rich surface texture.

06. Custom Glaze Formulation & Layering Explore glaze chemistry, mix raw materials, and experiment with multi-glaze layering for dynamic, reactive finishes.

07. Alternative Firing Methods Gain hands-on experience with high-fire kilns, reduction atmospheres, and specialty techniques like Raku, soda, or wood firing.

Questions Before You Begin?

Who can join the Advanced Pottery Course?

Intermediate to experienced ceramicists aged 16 and older who have a strong grasp of fundamental handbuilding and wheel-throwing techniques.

Is previous pottery experience required?

Yes. You must have existing wheel-throwing and handbuilding experience, as this course skips the basics and jumps straight into complex techniques.

What is the duration of the course?

The Advanced Course runs for 8 weeks, with two 2-hour sessions per week (32 total instruction hours).

What techniques are covered?

Throwing large volumes of clay (3kg+) for tall forms and wide platters

Multi-part thrown assembly (stacked pieces, precision-fit lids, custom spouts, and handles)

Advanced surface design (sgraffito, carved relief, and slip trailing)

Custom glaze formulation, reactive layering, and atmospheric firing methods (e.g., Raku or soda firing)

Do I need to complete the Basic Course first?

Not necessarily. While completing our Basic Course is recommended, we also accept students who can demonstrate equivalent prior experience (via a portfolio review or quick studio assessment).

Are materials and tools included?

Materials: Basic clay, studio glazes, and standard firing services are included. Specialized high-fire clays or luster glazes may be purchased separately.

Tools: Advanced shaping tools, calipers, turning tools, and studio wheels are provided for all participants.
